Hello friends! If you’re reading these lines, it means that the call of the open road has probably long settled in your soul, beckoning you away from the usual hustle and bustle, away from the asphalt jungle and endless traffic jams. But not on four wheels, no! Today we’re going to talk about something much more intimate, free, and dizzyingly alive – bicycle touring. About how two wheels can open up horizons you never dreamed of, and take you to corners of the world that no tourist bus can simply reach.
Personally, for me, a bike tour isn’t just a way to get around. It’s a philosophy. It’s a complete reset. You take a deep breath of the smells of freshly cut grass, wet earth after the rain, mountain flowers. You hear the tires crunching on gravel, the birds singing in the forest, the wind whistling in your ears. You feel every muscle working, your body filling with strength, and your brain with oxygen and new ideas. It’s a completely different experience than looking at the world through a bus window or, even worse, through a smartphone screen!
Let’s figure out why bicycle travel is pure bliss, where you can go even with minimal preparation, and what you need to make your steel horse a faithful companion in these adventures.
Why is Bicycle Touring Your Next Big Adventure?
Think about it:
- Complete Freedom! You are the master of your time and route. If you feel like it, stop at a picturesque lake, spread out a blanket, and drink coffee. If you feel like it, turn onto a country road because you see an old chapel not marked on the map. No schedules, no crowds of tourists, no “hurry up, we have the next stop!”
- Immersion in the Environment. On a bicycle, you don’t rush past the landscapes, you absorb them. You feel the terrain of the road, experience the temperature changes, and interact with locals at gas stations and in small cafes. It’s not “seeing,” it’s “living.”
- Health is Everything! Both physical and mental. Cycling is an excellent cardio workout, strengthening muscles and endurance. And constant exposure to fresh air, changing scenery, solving small road challenges – it’s the best stress reliever and a way to clear your head of unnecessary thoughts.
- Eco-Friendly and Economical. You don’t leave a carbon footprint, you breathe fresh air, and you contribute to saving the planet. Moreover, bike trips are often much cheaper than other types of tourism. You don’t have to spend money on expensive fuel, you can often sleep in a tent, and cook food on a stove.
- Incredible Encounters. On cycling routes, you often meet the same crazy (in a good way!) adventure lovers. Friendships are formed, sometimes for life, experiences are shared, and people help each other.

Routes for Everyone: From Tender Beginners to Fearless Conquerors of Peaks
The most important thing in bicycle touring is that you can start at any level of preparation! You don’t have to take on mountain passes right away – there’s plenty of time for that.
For Beginners and Family Trips (Easy Level)
What to look for: flat asphalt or gravel roads, minimal ascents, developed infrastructure (cafes, shops, toilets). The optimal daily distance is 50-70 km.
Where to Try
- Danube Cycle Path (Donauradweg), Europe: A legendary route along the Danube, through German, Austrian, and Hungarian towns and vineyards. Ideal for getting acquainted with bicycle touring.
- Cycle Paths of the Netherlands and Belgium: In these countries, the bicycle is king of the road. Excellent markings, routes through farms, canals, and the coast.
- Parks and Embankments of Major Ukrainian Cities: For example, in Kyiv (Obolonska Embankment, Trukhaniv Island), Lviv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa. Many excellent well-maintained cycle paths, there are opportunities for day trips to picturesque suburbs.
- Routes Along Water Bodies: Lake Svityaz in the Volyn region, Synevyr, along the Dnipro, Southern Bug, or Tisa.
For Those Who Got Hooked (Intermediate Level)
What to look for: a few hills, mixed terrain, a little more autonomy. Distance – 70-120 km per day.
Where to Try
- Tuscany, Italy: Waves of hills, the scent of cypresses, ancient villages – a real feast for aesthetics and physical strength.
- French Riviera: Beautiful views, picturesque towns, although sometimes you need to climb the cliffs.
- Transcarpathia and the Carpathians, Ukraine: Mariupol – Uzhhorod, Mukachevo – Lake Synevyr, along the Cheremosh – these are beautiful routes through foothills and valleys with moderate altitude changes. Cozy villages, bubbling rivers, authentic cuisine.
- Podolia and Precarpathia: Picturesque routes along the Dniester, canyons, castles, nature reserves. An excellent level for gaining experience and endurance.

For Experienced Riders and Extreme Lovers (Difficult Level)
What to look for: real mountain landscapes, off-road, autonomy, daily crossings with luggage. A shorter distance is possible due to the terrain.
Where to Try
- Alps (France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria): The most famous mountain passes in Europe, stunning views, and a real sporting challenge.
- Ladakh, India – Himalayas: Passes up to 5000+ meters, thin air, harsh conditions, and breathtaking views – an extreme option.
- Patagonia, Argentina/Chile: For lovers of the wild, windy, and truly remote. Here, nature tests your strength.
- High Carpathians (Goverla, Petros, Svydovets), Ukraine: These are options for experienced riders: many days in the mountains, minimal infrastructure, overnight stays in tents, the need to be completely autonomous.
Which Bicycle is Suitable?
An eternal question: which bike to choose for your tour? I’ll say it simply: there is no ideal. It all depends on the route and your requests.
- Road Bike: Light, fast, great on long highways, but requires good roads and minimal luggage. For quick runs around Europe – an excellent option.
- Mountain Bike (MTB): A must-have for bad roads, forests, dirt. But on asphalt, it’s heavy and energy-consuming. Good for off-road and bikepacking.
- Hybrid or Touring: Versatile, combines comfort, luggage mounts, and reliability. Excellent fit, a large selection of gears – suitable for multi-day routes of different levels.
- Gravel Bike: Something in between a road bike and an MTB, with speed, but ready for gravel and dirt roads. Well suited for mixed surfaces and dynamic touring.
- Electric Bike: Will help you travel further, relieve some of the load on the body. Especially relevant for starting out, if you want to expand your horizons but are not confident in your physical fitness.
What to Focus on When Choosing
- Comfort: A proper fit and frame selection are the key to joy, not pain, from the trip.
- Reliability: The simpler the components, the easier the repair on the road.
- Mounts: Space for a trunk, water bottles, and bags.
- Gear Selection: Especially if you plan on hills.
- Brakes: For trips with cargo – disc brakes are a priority.

Brief Preparation Instructions
Route: Be sure to combine GPS and paper maps – technology can fail. Assess the terrain, supply points, and overnight spots.
Equipment: Don’t take anything extra!
- Bicycle: get a maintenance check-up.
- You need airtight bags and a basic repair kit (tubes, wrenches, a little wire and electrical tape – it will come in handy!)
- First-aid kit, a set of clothes for different weather, bright and noticeable equipment, helmet – without compromise.
- If you plan on camping – tent, sleeping bag, stove.
- Navigation: power bank, smartphone holder.
Physical Training: A couple of months before, do training with a bag, gradually increase the distance and get used to the pace.
Safety: Always wear a helmet and reflectors, tell your loved ones about your plans, follow the traffic rules of each country.
Flexibility: Not everything will go according to plan – a flat tire, sudden rain, or an unexpected stop. It’s part of the adventure!
In General, What is This All About?
Bicycle touring is not just a sport and not just a way to get around. It is an opportunity to get to know yourself, see the world from a new, amazing perspective, and take a full breath of freedom. It’s an adventure that leaves an indelible mark on the soul, a collection of incredible stories, and a sense of pride in yourself.
So don’t delay! Start small, with a day trip out of town. Feel the wind in your hair, the squeak of the chain, the joy of every kilometer traveled. And perhaps very soon you will realize that two wheels are your ticket to endless horizons, where every morning promises new discoveries, and every evening – a well-deserved rest and contemplation of the stars above an unfamiliar land.
Go! The road awaits!
