I’m talking, of course, about Lake Ritsa in Abkhazia. If you’ve ever heard that name, you might imagine something picturesque. But believe me, all your expectations pale in comparison to reality. It’s not just a lake, but a whole universe. And I want to guide you through it in my casual way, without boring facts and dry figures. Just imagine we’re sitting over a cup of fragrant tea, and I’m sharing my impressions with you.
Ritsa: Not Just a Lake, but a Whole Universe
You know, travel isn’t just about beautiful Instagram photos (although it’s about that too, let’s be honest). It’s about sensations, about smells, about sounds, about those moments when you suddenly realize: “This is it, life!”. And Abkhazia, with its untouched nature and a special, measured rhythm, offers plenty of such moments. And Lake Ritsa is, perhaps, the brightest diamond in its crown.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. After all, the road to Ritsa is already a separate adventure, a whole performance that unfolds right before your eyes.
The Path to a Miracle: The Road to Ritsa is Already an Adventure!
It’s worth starting with the fact that getting to Ritsa isn’t just about getting in the car and “driving there.” It’s a whole expedition that begins long before you see the water’s surface of the lake. Imagine: you’re leaving, for example, from sunny Gagra or Pitsunda. At first, the road is relatively smooth, along the coast. Palm trees, eucalyptus trees, the sea sparkling to the right… Beautiful!
But then you turn off the highway, and the road begins to change. It becomes winding, serpentine. Low mountains, covered with lush, almost pristine greenery, begin to rise around you. The air changes – it becomes cooler, cleaner, smelling of pine needles and damp earth. This is the road along the Bzyb River – one of the most beautiful rivers in Abkhazia, whose waters have an indescribable turquoise hue.
There will definitely be stops along the way, and each of them is a separate reason for admiration. Here you pass the Blue Lake – small, but amazing. Its color is so saturated and unusual that it seems as if someone poured a tank of blue dye into it. Local legends say that these are the tears of a beautiful woman who was waiting for her beloved. And the water there is always cold, like a mountain glacier, and crystal clear.
Next is the Yupshar Canyon, or the “Stone Bag.” This is a place where the mountains come so close together that it seems as if they are about to close over your head. The walls of the gorge rise hundreds of meters, and the road winds right along the bottom. It’s always gloomy and cool there, even on the hottest day. It’s a feeling of the grandeur and power of nature that takes your breath away. And there’s also the Maiden’s Tears waterfall, flowing down the rocks, and the Men’s Tears – a powerful stream of water. Touch them – they say wishes come true.
And then, after a series of turns, descents and ascents, when you already think that it can’t be more beautiful… Suddenly, through the gaps in the trees, it opens up. That very thing for which you made this journey. Lake Ritsa. And you know, at that moment you just want to stop, turn off the engine and be silent. Because no words will be enough to describe this grandeur.
Ritsa in Person: A Lake That Changes Color
Imagine a bowl surrounded on all sides by towering mountains. These mountains, like gigantic guardians, are covered with dense forests that seem primeval. They are, in fact, like that – these are relict firs, spruces, and beeches that are hundreds of years old. The air here is so clean and fresh that you want to drink it. It is cool, saturated with the smells of pine needles and moisture.
And the water… Oh, the water! This is the main feature of Ritsa. It’s not just blue or green. It changes its color depending on the time of day, the weather, and even the angle of incidence of light. In the morning it can be saturated emerald, like a giant precious stone. At noon, under the bright sun, it becomes azure-turquoise, so transparent that you can see the stones on the bottom. And closer to evening, when the shadows lengthen, the water can acquire a deep blue or even steel shade. It’s mesmerizing. You stand and can’t take your eyes off it, trying to catch every shade.
Lake Ritsa is a true natural wonder. It was formed relatively recently, about 250 years ago, after a powerful earthquake, when a rockfall blocked the channel of the Lashipse River. Water filled this natural depression, creating one of the deepest lakes in the Caucasus (they say it’s up to 116 meters deep!). And it’s also very cold – even in the hottest summer months, the water temperature rarely rises above +10-15 degrees Celsius. So only the most desperate walruses decide to swim. But it’s worth it, for a boost of energy!
Legends and Truth: From the Beautiful Ritsa to Leaders
Like any mysterious and beautiful place, Ritsa is shrouded in many legends. The most famous, of course, is the story of the beautiful Ritsa and her brothers. Once upon a time, three brothers lived in these mountains – Agepsta, Atsetuka, and Pshegishkha. They were hunters and loved their younger sister Ritsa very much, who was amazingly beautiful and had a ringing voice. Every day the brothers went hunting, and Ritsa stayed at home, herded sheep, and sang her wonderful songs. One day, she became so engrossed in singing that she didn’t notice robbers creeping up on her. They grabbed her and began to carry her away. Ritsa desperately cried out and called for help.
The brothers, hearing the cries, rushed to the rescue. They engaged in a fight with the robbers, but the forces were unequal. In the heat of battle, one of the brothers, Agepsta, threw his sword, but missed and accidentally struck his sister. Ritsa fell, and in the place where her tears were shed, a deep lake was formed. The brothers wept so bitterly that their tears filled the gorges, turning into the rivers that now flow into Ritsa. And they themselves, unable to bear the grief, petrified and turned into the very mountains that surround the lake. A sad, but such a beautiful story, isn’t it?
But Ritsa is not only legends. It is also a living history that has left its mark on the shores of the lake. I am talking, of course, about the dachas of Stalin and Brezhnev. This is, perhaps, the most unusual neighborhood – pristine nature and relics of the Soviet era. Stalin’s dacha is a kind of time machine. It was built in 1947, and everything has been preserved here: furniture, interiors, personal belongings of the leader. It seems that he will return from his office any minute.
A modest (by dictator standards) building, painted green to blend in with the landscape, but inside everything is thought out to the smallest detail. Several bedrooms, an office, a billiard room, a cinema… And most importantly – the view from the windows. Imagine sitting there and looking at this beauty, when the whole country is at your feet. A little creepy, but incredibly interesting.
Nearby, a little further away, is Brezhnev’s dacha. It is more modern, but also breathes the spirit of that era. It is felt that the place was chosen not by chance – seclusion, peace, the opportunity to relax from the bustle and, apparently, make important decisions in an atmosphere of absolute calm. These dachas are not just buildings, they are witnesses of an entire era, a place where destinies were decided. And to walk around them, to touch these walls, is like reading a chapter from a history textbook, but in 3D format.
What to Do at Ritsa? Not Just Look
Lake Ritsa is not a museum where you can only walk and look. There are things to do here to fully enjoy your vacation. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is photos. Hundreds, thousands of photos! After all, every angle, every hour of the day is a new picture. Take a good camera with you, and you won’t regret it. But not just photos.
Want to feel like part of this greatness? Take a catamaran or boat ride on the lake. Rent a small vessel and sail away from the shore. There, in the silence, you will feel the scale of this place. The mountains will seem even higher, the water – even clearer. It’s an indescribable feeling of freedom and unity with nature.
There are many cafes and restaurants on the shore where you can taste real Abkhazian cuisine. Barbecue, mamalyga, cheese, homemade wine – everything is fresh and very tasty. And what an aroma is in the air! And, of course, what about souvenirs? Honey, mountain herbs, handicrafts – all this can be bought as a souvenir of your trip.
Just sitting on the shore, listening to the silence, taking a deep breath of this incredible air – it’s already meditation. To feel like a small grain of sand in this huge, but such a beautiful world. Lake Ritsa, by the way, is part of the Ritsa Relict National Park, so the entire area around it is protected. This means that it is clean, well-groomed, and it is very important to treat nature with care. No litter, please! We want this beauty to please us for hundreds of years to come.

- When to go? The ideal time is late spring (May) or early autumn (September-October). In spring everything blooms, the greenery is fresh, the waterfalls are full. In autumn, the mountains are painted in incredible golden and crimson hues, creating a fabulous atmosphere. Summer is also good, but it can be hot, and there are more tourists. In winter, by the way, it’s also beautiful, but the road can be covered with snow.
- What to bring? Be sure to bring a warm sweater or light jacket, even if it’s hot below. The weather in the mountains changes quickly. Comfortable shoes – for walking along the shore and exploring the surroundings. A camera, as I said before. And, of course, a good mood!
- Food and drinks. Don’t worry, you won’t go hungry. There are many cafes, the prices are reasonable. But if you like picnics, you can take something to eat with you. It is better to buy water along the way – it is crystal clear in the mountains.
- Time. Allocate a whole day for Ritsa. Don’t rush, enjoy every moment. The road there and back will take time, plus the excursion itself.
- Excursion or on your own? You can go with an organized tour (which is more convenient if you are without a car), or you can rent a car or take a taxi. The main thing is to agree on the price in advance. An independent trip gives more freedom, but you need to be confident in your driving skills on serpentines.
- Be prepared for toll sections. The road to the national park is paid, as is the entrance to the dachas. This is normal, this money goes to the maintenance of the park.
