Hello! If you’re reading these lines, it probably means that, like me once, you’re looking for something special for your next vacation. Maybe you’re tired of the beaten paths, the crowds of tourists, and the feeling that you’re just being “processed” by the tourism industry. Well, then let me tell you about Mellieħa – a gem of Malta that for me personally was a real discovery and, perhaps, will be for you too. Forget for a moment about the big names and popular, hyped places, let’s immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of this amazing corner of the Mediterranean.

Where the wind blows from, or a little history to not be completely ignorant
You know, I always thought history was boring. Until I started traveling and realized that without it, any place is just a set of pictures. Mellieħa in this regard is simply a treasure trove! Its history goes back centuries, and these are not just pretty words. Imagine: people lived here as early as the Bronze Age! The remains of their settlements, these very megaliths, are scattered around – it’s incredibly cool to realize that you’re walking on the same land as someone thousands of years ago.
Then came the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs… Each left their mark. Malta in general is like a layered cake of cultures, and Mellieħa is no exception. But the era of the Knights of Malta was especially prominent here. These guys, the Order of St. John, built watchtowers here to defend against pirate raids. And you know what? Some of these towers are still standing! For example, the famous Red Tower (St. Agatha’s Tower) – it’s simply a postcard you can touch. You stand on it, look at the bay, and imagine how ships were chased down below. It gives you goosebumps!
During World War II, Mellieħa also did not stand aside. There were bombings, there were shelters… All this gives the town a special depth, somehow. You understand that it’s not just a resort, but a place with character that has seen a lot. And that, in my opinion, makes it even more attractive.

Climate: a fairy tale, not just weather!
Honestly, I’m a sun worshipper. And Mellieħa in this regard is simply the perfect place. It has a Mediterranean climate, which means hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Essentially, most of the year it’s sunny and warm here. Spring and autumn are my favorite times for Malta. The temperature is ideal for walks, the sea is still (or already) warm, and there are far fewer tourists than in summer. You can calmly enjoy nature, sit on a terrace with a glass of wine, without fear of being swept away by a crowd.
Winter is also not bad, if you don’t expect snow, of course. The temperature rarely drops below +10°C, and there are many sunny days. This is a great option for those who want to escape the damp Russian winter and get their dose of vitamin D. However, be prepared that it can be cool in the evenings, so a light jacket won’t hurt. But overall, the climate here is simply a gift that allows you to enjoy Malta almost all year round.

Mellieħa for tourists: more than just a beach holiday
“Beach holiday” is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear about Mellieħa. And yes, the beaches here are gorgeous, more on that below. But Mellieħa is much more. It’s a place that offers a wide range of opportunities for any type of traveler.
Prospects? Oh, wow!
Malta in general is actively developing as a tourist destination, and Mellieħa is not lagging behind. New hotels, restaurants are constantly appearing here, and the infrastructure is improving. But the most valuable thing is that the town manages to develop without losing its authenticity and charm. It’s not some faceless tourist enclave, but a living town where tourists and locals coexist in harmony.
Mellieħa actively promotes ecotourism, diving, and active recreation. There are all the conditions for hiking, bicycle routes. And it is also an ideal starting point for exploring all of Malta. All major attractions are within an hour’s bus or car ride, and bus service in Malta is quite good. So you can safely base yourself in Mellieha and explore the island from there.

Attractions: not just beaches, believe me!
As I already mentioned, Mellieha is not as simple as it seems. Here are a few must-visit places:
Mellieha Parish Church: This is not just a church, it is a true architectural masterpiece. It is built on top of a hill, and from there, you get simply stunning views of the bay. The interior is also very beautiful, all these frescoes, altars… You feel like you are in some Italian hinterland.
Our Lady of Mellieha Shrine: This place is a true sanctuary. An ancient cave where, according to legend, the first Christians found refuge. Here is an ancient fresco depicting the Virgin Mary. The atmosphere there is simply incredible, very peaceful.
St. Agatha’s Tower (Red Tower): I already talked about this beauty. Climb it, the view is simply fantastic! And you will learn a lot of interesting things about Malta’s defense system.

Popeye Village: Oh yes! If you are traveling with children (or are a child at heart yourself, like me), then this place is a MUST SEE. This is not some new build, it’s actually the film set for the movie “Popeye” with Robin Williams! The houses, the decorations – everything has remained as it was. You can walk around, participate in animation, eat ice cream. It’s just a fountain of positivity!
Ghadira Nature Reserve: If you love nature and birds, then this is your place. The reserve is located right next to Ghadira beach and is home to many species of migratory birds. An excellent place for a quiet walk and birdwatching.

Beaches: where golden sand meets azure sea
And now, what many people come to Mellieha for – its beaches! And they are simply magnificent here.
- Mellieha Bay / Ghadira Bay: This is the largest sandy beach in Malta. And it’s a really cool place! The sand is golden, the water is clean and shallow near the shore, which is ideal for children. All amenities are here: umbrellas, sun loungers, cafes, water sports. And the sunsets here – they are something unreal! You can sit in a cafe, sip a cocktail, and watch the sun set over the horizon, painting the sky in all shades of orange and pink.
- Golden Bay: A little further from Mellieha, but easy to reach. Also a stunning sandy beach, surrounded by picturesque cliffs. It’s a little less crowded here than at Ghadira, and the atmosphere is more secluded.
- Paradise Bay: As the name suggests, this is simply a paradise! A small but very picturesque beach with crystal clear water. It’s a little harder to access (you’ll have to go down some steps), but the effort is worth it. An excellent place for snorkeling.
- Ghajn Tuffieha Bay / Riviera Beach: Another stunning beach, often called “Riviera beach”. It is located next to Golden Bay, but here the sand is darker, reddish. There are cliffs all around, which gives it a special charm. Ideal for those who love picturesque landscapes.

Almost all beaches offer opportunities for diving, snorkeling, parasailing, and other water activities. The sea here is clean and very warm, especially in summer.
Entertainment: from sunset to sunrise (almost)
Of course, Mellieha is not Ibiza, and there are not many nightclubs here. But it has its own special atmosphere.
Restaurants and cafes
There are many of them here! From cozy family taverns serving traditional Maltese cuisine (you must try the rabbit stew – Fenkata!) to exquisite restaurants with panoramic views. The prices are very pleasant, and the food is finger-licking good. My personal favorites are those with a bay view, where you can dine while watching the sunset.

Bars
In the evening, many bars come alive, offering live music, karaoke, or simply a quiet atmosphere for conversation. This is a great place to try local wines or cocktails.
Promenade walks
Simply walking along the promenade in the evening, breathing in the sea air and listening to the sound of the waves – that’s also a kind of entertainment. And very peaceful.
Festivals and holidays
Malta generally loves holidays. And Mellieħa is no exception. In summer, various festivals, concerts, and religious processions take place here. This is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and feel part of something bigger.

Water sports
As I mentioned, the beaches have everything for active recreation: scooter rentals, kayaks, paddleboards, catamarans.
Diving and snorkeling
Mellieħa’s crystal-clear waters and sunken ships (for divers) make it an ideal place for underwater adventures. There are many diving schools where you can get training or try a discovery dive.

Interesting facts about Mellieħa: a little cherry on top
- Popeye Village: Yes, I already mentioned it, but it’s a truly unique place! It’s not an attraction, but a real film set turned into a theme park.
- Affectionate nickname: Locals sometimes call Mellieħa “Mellieħa ta’ tlett iħeġġi” – “Mellieħa of three wishes”. They say that if you make three wishes here, they will surely come true. I made mine, now I’m waiting!
- Northernmost point: Mellieħa is the northernmost town on the main island of Malta. From here, it’s a stone’s throw to the ferry crossing to Gozo and Comino.
- Vineyards: Around Mellieħa, there are several small vineyards producing local Maltese wines. Some of them are open for tastings – an excellent option for gastronomic tourism.
- Sunken ferry: Not far from Mellieħa, at a depth of about 35 meters, lies the sunken ferry MV Rozi, which was specially scuttled for divers in 1992. This is one of the most popular diving spots in Malta.
- Multilingualism: Malta has two official languages – Maltese and English. So there will be no communication problems at all, almost everyone speaks English.

Conclusion: why Mellieħa is my personal paradise
You know, after all these travels around the world, I realized one simple thing: you truly cling to places where you feel at home. Where there’s no hustle and bustle, where people are genuinely happy to see you, where nature is breathtaking, and history penetrates your very heart. Mellieħa has become exactly such a place for me.
It’s not a loud, pretentious resort. It’s a place where you can relax, recharge, enjoy the sun and the sea, and at the same time learn something new and interesting. It’s an ideal balance between active recreation and peaceful relaxation. Here, everyone will find something for themselves: both the beach bum, and the avid diver, and the history explorer, and even those who are simply looking for a beautiful sunset.

Don’t forget to try the local cuisine — just like Mellieħa itself, it’s full of vibrant flavors and aromas. Each dish here tells its own story and adds a special mood to your trip.
